Transforming Melodies into Meows: The Story of Grosse Pointe Animal Adoption Society

by | Feb 5, 2024

In the heart of The Grosse Pointes and Harper Woods, amid suburban tranquility and urban bustle, stands a beacon of hope for countless stray and injured animals – the Grosse Pointe Animal Adoption Society (GPAAS). This remarkable organization, a state-licensed animal protection facility, has a rich and intriguing past, as diverse as the community it serves. Founded in 1988, GPAAS has been dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating animals in need, providing them with a haven and a chance for a better life. Over the years, they have successfully found loving homes for thousands of animals, thanks to their tireless efforts and the support of the local community.

A Humane Haven: The Mission of GPAAS

Since its inception in 1991, GPAAS has taken on the noble mission of providing a haven and medical care for the community’s lost and injured pets. Its commitment extends beyond sheltering to actively seeking foster homes or permanent placements for unclaimed animals through its robust adoption program. Unflagging in its dedication to animal welfare, GPAAS takes the difficult step of humane euthanasia for those animals critically injured or deemed untreatable.

The counseling and training provided by GPAAS form a crucial part of the adoption process, ensuring a positive experience for the adopter and the proper care for the animal. As a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, GPAAS has been held in high esteem within the community, transforming the lives of both the animals it rescues and the people who adopt them.

Strays to Stars: The Impact of GPAAS

For nearly three decades, GPAAS has been a haven for stray animals, with nearly 70 percent of its occupants coming from this category. Despite only 30 percent of strays being reclaimed by their owners, GPAAS ensures that the rest are evaluated, vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and medically treated if necessary. The organization prides itself on its adoption program, finding homes for 400-500 animals each year and placing approximately 8,000 rescued animals in loving homes since its establishment.

Echoing Past, Harmonizing Future: The Legacy

In 2020, GPAAS opened the Thomas A. Mackey Adoption Center, a 4,700-square-foot facility with a unique past. Its walls, which once resonated with the tunes of Bob Seger, Glenn Frey, Suzi Quatro, and the MC5 at “The Hideout”, now echo with the barks and meows of hopeful animals awaiting adoption. A mural in the TMAAC lobby pays tribute to the building’s musical legacy, a poignant reminder of the vibrant past meeting the compassionate present. The Thomas A. Mackey Adoption Center not only provides a haven for animals in need but also serves as a symbol of the community’s commitment to animal welfare. With its spacious and welcoming environment, the center continues to honor its musical history while embracing a future filled with compassion and love for all animals.
